A Career Defined by Innovation & Partnership
Michael J. Sacks is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of GCM Grosvenor. He joined the firm in 1990 and was named Chief Executive Officer in 1994.
Under his leadership spanning more than three decades, GCM Grosvenor has grown from an early participant in a cottage industry into one of the largest open-architecture alternative asset management platforms globally — with investment capabilities spanning private equity, absolute return strategies, infrastructure, credit, real estate, and strategic investments.
Mr. Sacks’s vision has been defined by a commitment to building long-term trusted partnerships with clients, delivering deep global alternatives expertise, and pioneering innovative solutions that solve real investor problems across market cycles.
Rooted in Chicago, Connected to the World
Philanthropy and civic engagement are longstanding priorities for Mr. Sacks and his wife, Cari. Together they serve on the board of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and are involved with the Art Institute of Chicago, among numerous other cultural and educational institutions.
Mr. Sacks is a founding member of the Obama Foundation, a trustee at Northwestern University, and a member and co-chair of the Mayor’s Economic Council. He also previously served as vice chairman of World Business Chicago for eight years.
His civic and cultural involvement spans the Chicago Urban League, the Economic Club of Chicago, the Commercial Club of Chicago, the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, the Chicago Children’s Museum, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Education and Recognition
A member of the Illinois Bar, Mr. Sacks graduated from Tulane University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and holds a general course certificate from the London School of Economics. He also earned a Master of Business Administration from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and a Juris Doctor from Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law.
Mr. Sacks was named Crain’s Chicago Business Executive of the Year for 2025 and received the Executive Leader Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals Chicago Chapter in 2020.
